About me :

My goodness, the questions that have come in to me about all this!

Let’s start by clearing a few things up :

I don't set the speed limits any where - but I DO know that they are law and the signs say "maximum" which tells me that if it says "Maximum 100kms" that you are supposed to drive up to and including that speed limit but not more. I've read recently the Manitoba Drivers Manual and it even states that if you're passing someone, you are still NOT permitted to go over the maximum posted speed limit. At the same time, I do believe that people who drive substantially slower can be quite hazardous if they are not following the “flow” of traffic.

I do NOT drive significantly lower than the speed limit. On optimum driving days, I drive the speed limit. I will openly admit, I do have a "heavy foot" so there are times when I look at my speedometer, cuss at myself, and then address the issue appropriately to go back DOWN to the maximum speed limit. I am NOT perfect nor am I expecting anyone else to be!

I do believe that if the conditions for driving are the pits – then I feel we should reduce our speed appropriately so as we are SAFELY driving the roads.

If I am going the posted speed limit – I DO NOT feel there is any reason for people to pass me. I’m already doing the speed limit so….

If I was doing 20kms UNDER the speed limit in optimum conditions, I would expect frustration from other drivers, particularly if they could not pass.

Here’s the “big question” on everyone’s mind….

My driving history :

I’m 37 years old, I say this as I ONLY GOT MY FULL DRIVERS LISCENCE in 2007 year! That means – I have only had my license for just over one year!!!!

Before your jaws drop, let me explain why.

I got my beginners the first time in high school. I took the driver training course and passed the written but when it came time to drive, I didn’t feel ready so I didn’t drive and didn’t get my full license. From that point until somewhere in 1997, I got my beginners license numerous times but still did not get my full license as I never went for the tests.

In about 1990 I was in the military and was required to get my 404’s (military driver’s license) which again required my beginners. I passed the military drivers course and was licensed to drive the Iltis, MRT, MLVW and crew cab truck. I drove for the military but mostly in the “field” and not on city streets.

Back in about ’95 I got my beginners AGAIN *lol* and hired a driving school but once again didn’t feel ready to drive so I didn’t go for my full test. Then somewhere around early 2000’s, I inherited a car from my Grandmother. So again, I got my beginners and passed! But *laughing* I drove a few times and parked the car in the garage where it sat for years not being touched.

In January of 2007, my beloved German Shepherd Isaac passed away and soon after I was the proud owner of a beautiful blue Doberman named Gunner. It wasn’t planned but Gunner was “show quality” and I soon started travelling to the dog shows with my parents. At the same time, I was taking Gunner everyday to work which was too far to walk so him and I went in style by taxi cab!

Not sure what happened then but one morning I woke up and decided that I was sick of living in the city and I was going to move out of town. Of course I would now need both a vehicle as well as a driving license as it would be VERY expensive to take cab. I thought long and hard and decided I was finally ready. I got my beginners AGAIN, hired a driving school AGAIN, and began taking lessons in the dead of winter thinking that if I could drive in the winter, feel confident and pass – then I could drive anytime. So I did it!

In July of 2008, after a solid few months of driving and liking it, I bought my house out of town.

Please know, I am a confident driver. And I’m told that I am a very good driver. I attribute this to numerous things. I didn’t get my license because it was “time” to do it in high school, or because others told me I should have it throughout the years later. Heck, I even dated a guy (SHORTLY) who thought I was literally CRAZY for not having it. I only did it when I was ready.

So I have ONLY had my license since December of 2007. So far, I have had no accidents, no speeding tickets etc. And say what you will about my lack of driving history but whether I drive professionally or not – the law is the law and facts are facts.

Common sense is common sense.

Now, I await the comments on how dare I cause an issue when I've been barely driving. Or better yet - becuase I've been driving for such a short period of time - I must be afraid, insecure, or so forth of driving.

Completely the opposit people. I began driving when I was ready to drive, ready to accept the responcibilites that came with it and able to accept the ramifications of poor choices I might make on the road.

Maybe, if others did this - we'd be better off. Or, how about all people looking to get their license can only take their driving tests in the winter during extreme conditions?!? I personally drove my test in a blizzard - and passed. Maybe that's why I still have all the paint on my car.
